Shoebox Appeal
This year we hope to work in conjunction with Churchyardigans and support children less fortunate than ourselves by filling shoeboxes with appropriate small gifts.  Formerly known as Operation Christmas Child, the gifts are then distributed to children affected by war, famine, disaster or poverty.  We are asking for small donations of appropriate gifts.  These may include such items as packets of pencils, colouring books, small dolls, marbles, balls, toy cars, skipping ropes and other such stocking fillers.  The children will then be invited to make up the shoe boxes as part of a Churchyardigan’s activity on Sunday 21st November from 4.00pm to 5.00pm in St. Michael’s Church.  We would be grateful for all donations, including Christmas wrapping paper, however please be aware that some gifts may be inappropriate e.g. toy guns.

Irish Visit
Thank you to all those who helped make the Irish visit a great success.  Our visitors were over- whelmed with the hospitality received from all those involved.  All the Year 5 & 6 children have enjoyed spending time with their friends from St Thomas’ school and we look forward to developing the partnership in the future.

The history of our Irish partnership

The partnership between Ysgol yr Esgob and St. Thomas National School, Peterswell, Ireland, has now firmly been established with the first half of an exchange visit taking place in October 2009, with a party of 16 children and 5 adults travelling from Caerwys to spend four days with families in Peterswell.

After leaving school at 5.00am on Monday morning, the group arrived in Gort at 9.45 for a traditional Irish breakfast and then to the school for a rousing welcome from the entire school, who were lined up in the playground waiting patiently for our arrival.  Over the next few days the children had a wonderful time and enjoyed many new experiences including a visit to Bunratty Castle and Folk Museum, Kiltartan School Museum, Coole Park and Ennis (for ten- pin bowling.)

We were entertained by our hosts with concerts, displays of juggling, traditional Irish dancing and coaching sessions in Gaelic Football and Hurling.  All the children and staff were hosted by families who were most welcoming and could not do enough to help.

Many new friendships were established and now plans are already underway for the second half of the exchange, which will see a visit to Caerwys by staff, children and parents from Peterswell in June 2009.
